Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change. — Wayne Dyer

In NLP, one of the most profound and practical tools available to us is reframing. At its core, reframing is about changing the meaning we assign to an experience — and in doing so, changing how we feel about it and how we respond to it.

Every setback you have ever experienced had a meaning attached to it. And that meaning was not fixed — it was chosen, consciously or unconsciously. Reframing gives you the power to choose a better meaning.

What Is Reframing?

Reframing is the process of looking at a situation, event, or behavior from a different perspective — one that changes its meaning and emotional impact. It does not deny the reality of the situation; it expands your interpretation of it.

Two Types of Reframing in NLP

  1. Context Reframing: Changing the context in which you see a behavior or event. Example: Being overly detail-oriented may seem like a flaw in casual conversation, but it is an asset in quality control or surgery.
  2. Content Reframing: Changing the meaning of the event itself. Example: Losing a job is not the end — it is the beginning of a career that truly aligns with your purpose.

Real-Life Applications of Reframing

  • In Relationships: Instead of seeing a disagreement as conflict, reframe it as an opportunity to understand your partner better.
  • In Career: Instead of seeing rejection as failure, reframe it as redirection toward a better-fit opportunity.
  • In Health: Instead of seeing a health scare as a curse, reframe it as a wake-up call to prioritize your wellbeing.

How to Reframe in the Moment

  1. Pause and Notice: Catch yourself in the moment of negative interpretation.
  2. Ask a Better Question: What could this mean that would be useful or empowering?
  3. Choose the Empowering Meaning: Consciously adopt the interpretation that serves your growth.
  4. Act from That Place: Let the new meaning guide your next action.

Reframing Is a Skill, Not a Gift

The good news is that reframing is not something you are born with — it is a skill you can develop with practice. The more you consciously apply it, the more naturally it will begin to happen.

Start today. Take one challenge you are currently facing and ask: What is the gift in this situation? You might be surprised by what you discover.
